Auto Upholstery Repair Process for DIY Enthusiasts

Seat Removal

Before anything else, remove the seat from the truck. Don’t attempt the automotive upholstery repair inside the vehicle—it’s impractical unless you're an acrobat!

Use a socket to unbolt the seat from the floorboard. If a 15-millimeter socket doesn’t fit, try a 14 or 13 by process of elimination.

On your workbench, remove the old seat cover by unclipping it from the foam and frame.

Install New Cover

Attach the new cover to the foam using Velcro, hog rings, or other fasteners. Then, secure it to the seat frame.

Once the new cover is perfectly in place, reinstall the seat back into your vehicle.

The 3 Ways to Attach A Seat Cover

Have you ever wondered how your seat covers attach onto your seat? There are three distinct methods for securing them and understanding these methods is good for both installation and maintenance of your seat covers.

Velcro (Hook and Loop) for Automotive Upholstery Repair

One of the first methods, and possibly one of the easiest, is Velcro, also known as hook and loop. This method involves two parts: the fuzzy side, which is sewn onto the underside of the seat cover, and the prickly side, which attaches to the foam cushion. Just pressing the Velcro together secures the cover firmly in place.

If you need to readjust or reposition the cover during installation, simply pull it back up and reattach it. Velcro is incredibly user-friendly and is a personal favorite due to its ease of use and adjustability.

Hog Ring for Auto Upholstery Repair

The second method, called the Hog Ring technique, employs a large metal staple. This method involves a rail sewn onto the underside of the seat cover and attached to the foam cushion. This rail hooks into the foam with wire embedded in the foam mold. Using a set of hog ring pliers, you crimp the metal staple so it forms a tight triangle, securely holding the cover in place.

This technique has been around for ages and is still widely used in upholstery jobs. Despite being somewhat phased out, you'll still find Hog Rings in many classic and modern vehicles.

Retainer Clip for an OEM Seat Upholstery Replacement

The third attachment method is the Retainer Clip, a plastic piece embedded in the foam. Commonly found in newer models starting from around 2007, these clips perform the same job as Velcro and Hog Rings.

The retainer clip method involves a rail with felt material and a plastic piece crimped on the end, which snaps into place within the clip in the foam. Although convenient and easy to attach, the plastic nature of these clips means they may become brittle and crack over time. While effective, Velcro and Hog Rings are often preferred for their durability.

Each of these methods offers unique benefits and has its own set of advantages. Velcro is easy and adjustable, Hog Rings provide a time-tested solution, and Retainer Clips offer modern convenience. When deciding on which method to use, consider the longevity and ease of installation that fits your needs.
